They launched an international IPTV service called TFCko. It airs three Philippine TV stations, two radio stations, and over 4,000 hours of video-on demand (VOD) through the internet. It also offers an on liver version of the brand named as TFCnow!. “We launched our IPTV service more than a year ago, and so far we have about 27,000 subscribers in our three regional markets of Canada, Japan, and Europe,” says Enrique Olives, ABS-CBN Global’s director for business development. “The potential market for ABS-CBN domestic programming is huge internationally. As the largest broadcaster in the Philippines, ABS-CBN is a natural choice for the best in Philippine drama, variety shows, comedies, movies and news.” It is web-based cable TV sold through local dealers in the company’s target audience (StreamGuys, Inc. Delivers ABS-CBN Broadcast TV from the Philippines Globally).
“The customer simply arranges for service at his local dealer, takes the set-top box home, plugs the Internet into one side and the TV into the other, and they have access to our programming.” Delany says. However, their is a problem with bandwidth in countries such as Canada wherein there is “bandwidth throtting” or “bandwidth caps” is taking place. Canada is limited to bandwidths. “Bandwidth throttling is aimed at peer-to- peer file sharing” says Olives. This challenge affects ABS-CBN’s delivery in IPTV programming as they require high bandwidth rates that causes signal interruptions and delays. As a solution to this problem, ABS-CBN is working with his IPTV partners to bring each IPTV channel to only 500-600 kbps. Every IPTV service encounters this problem as it remains a challenge for them to deliver high quality videos online (StreamGuys, Inc. Delivers ABS-CBN Broadcast TV from the Philippines Globally).

The former ABS-CBN North America Bureau chief, Regina “Ging” Reyes has come back as the senior vice president for News and Current Affairs. Reyes has innovated the ABS-CBN news programs in the US as she has changed the way the news was delivered. Now as the senior vice president for News and Current Affairs, she has introduced a set of instructions for their use of social networking sites. This has pushed the network to be more interactive in media. However, these sites need quick updates in delivering news. With this being said, it is easy to make mistakes and this is what the guidelines tried to minimize (ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs: New Challenges). Bayan mo I-Patrol Mo. n.d. ABS-CBN. Social media plays a key role in a Filipino’s life as it is evident in their daily lives with Filipinos being ranked as the 6th top Facebook users in the world. Furthermore, it is a good tool for millennial citizens in reporting crime in their surroundings to ABS-CBN’s “Bayan mo, i-Patrol Mo” (ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs: New Challenges).
“I believe that we will be better equipped for the world changes in media if we are aware of our potentialities to swing between right and wrong. More significantly, I say all this because I have great trust in the young. You are an empowered generation. But your power must be matched with values,” said CEO Eugenio L. Lopez III (EL3) in his speech that warns the journalists in the power of social media (ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs: New Challenges). Furthermore, the network is opening its doors to delivering the news through various platforms. “The thrust is to become a multi-platform organization, breaking down barriers, “We want our reporters to be able to report on all of the platforms.” says Reyes. However, they would not follow in the footsteps of the NCAD who uses a new technology called hologram or augmented reality. “I believe that nothing beats a good story, and that great content is more important than the technology. I agree that it is useful for other programs that would benefit from it, but I don’t think it’s a must for news.” (ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs: New Challenges). ABS-CBN continues to face new challenges as it progresses into the digital age. Regina “Ging” Reyes has come up with a set of guidelines that would set the road for their social media journalists to minimize their mistakes. CEO Eugenio L. Lopez also does not fail to remind its journalists on the power of social media to the audience. The network is opening its doors to new platforms but they still emphasize on the importance of the content rather than the technology used to deliver it (ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs: New Challenges). |
